Eaton Socon A 4, Saffron Dynamos 3

29th October 2016 :: John Ablett Cup

Today the A team lads faced a tough tie in the John Ablett Cup against an unfamiliar opposition of Saffron Dynamo. Eaton Socon started slowly and allowed Saffron into the game in the opening minutes, after a few scares the Eaton boys calmed down and started to play some good football whilst maintaining possession of the ball. This showed as James Playboy Taylor went through one on one with the Saffron keeper, the ball was on the 6 yard line and in a typically strong 50/50 challenge Taylor won the challenge and passed the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 Eaton Socon.

The game went into a stale mate until half time with both teams making progress but nothing meaningful. The game was starting to become a bit nasty as the tackles flew in and the Saffron striker was shown a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Taylor after being shrugged off the ball by Jonjo 'Jogba' Smith. Eaton Socon management made a couple of changes at half time with Sam Drew returning from his holidays for Troy Beavis.

The 2nd half started badly for Eaton with Saffron flying out of the traps and quickly establishing a 2-1 advantage picking up on some sloppy Eaton defending. The boys battled on and after a couple more substitutions which included Craig Thomas coming on for Liam Watts and Josh Draper coming on for Jake Dexter. Thomas made an immediate impact as he chased onto a through ball and squeezed the ball in from a tight angle inside 5 minutes of coming on. 2-2. Thomas then showed his deadly striking ability as he got on the ball in the opponents box and after turning the defender inside out finished smartly with his left foot. 3-2 Eaton.

Saffron came back again at Eaton as the striker had a pop from 25 yards out and it cannoned back off the crossbar only to be nodded in the player/manager of Saffron. 3-3. Soon after through the gobby Saffron striker was letting his mouth run away and was shown a second yellow and was off. With extra time looming Eaton Socon subbed Dexter back on for the ever reliable Wade Cockram.

Eaton made an excellent start to first half of extra time and this showed as they maintained the ball and exploited the wide areas expertly, this proved to be decisive as Jonjo 'Jogba' played a pin point ball down the right flank to Dexter who orgasmically flicked the ball over the oncoming defenders head and followed this up with a sublime finish over the keepers head into the top left corner perhaps it was cross but nobody cared... the celebrations reigned, 4-3 Eaton Socon. The game continued into the second half of extra time and Saffron piled on the pressure but Eaton withstood this with some sturdy and resolute defending including some tough tackles Luke Jakes.

A brilliant result for the lads after some painful injuries last week and we wish Jay and Damian a speedy recovery.
