Eaton Socon A 2, Girton United Res 3

3rd December 2016 :: Cambs FA County League MPG 3A

The A team at Eaton Socon looked to get back to winning ways in a home game against high flying Girton Reserves. Things started off slowly for the lads as Girton looked menacing with their pacy striker causing a few issues for the Eaton back line. Girton took the lead as a loose ball was pounced upon by a midfielder and lashed into the Eaton Socon net. 0-1. The game went from bad to worse as the pacy front man was allowed in after more sloppy play and on his second attempt tucked the ball away, 0-2.

Things continued to go downhill as upon his return Toby McEvoy was booked after a poorly timed challenge, a tad rusty maybe. As half time approached Eaton Socon looked to be establishing a foothold in the game and their football was tearing holes in the Girton back line, a number of crosses and excellent wing play saw chances go begging for the front men of Asa Johnson and Lee Griffiths. This wing play though proved to be Eaton’s route back into the match as the ball was swung in to which Johnson was pulled and tripled in the box, penalty Eaton Socon, Charlie Gough stepped up and cooly dispatched the penalty. Half time.

Eaton came out in the second half with a high tempo game plan but it just wasn’t clicking today and Girton managed to survive against constant pressure for the first 20 minutes.
The best chance was made in the second half when Luke Jakes picked out Jake Dexter with a 50 yard diagonal ball at the back stick but unusually Dexters touch let him down at the vital moment. Changes were made as Jakesy was replaced by Callum Moore and soon after Sam Drew was replaced by Hayden O Connor who was available again. Girton though found themselves on the counter and managed to find the far corner of the net with a well placed shot. 1-3 . It wasn’t Eaton’s day that was 3 shot 3 soft goals. Eaton altered their shape and brought on Josh Draper who had a very positive effect on the match and got in amongst the bodies after a long throw from Dexter found Draper and he bundled the ball into the net. 2-3. The game was set for a grandstand finish but sadly the boys couldn’t find a way through and the scoreline remained unchanged.

Eaton were unlucky today but the barren run continues. Final score Eaton Socon 2 Girton 3.
