Eaton Socon 1, Eynesbury United 2

8th December 2018 :: Cambs FA County League Kershaw Premier

Eaton’s 4 game winning run came to an end after a closely fought 2-1 defeat to our most local neighbours Eynesbury Rovers. The afternoon started with the unveiling of the new “Neville Cooper” stand named aptly for his services to the club spanning over 30 years.

The game started at a fantastic pace with the home side unlucky not to take the lead after getting the better of the early exchanges. As the game headed goalless towards half time the away side enjoyed their best period of possession without creating any clear cut goal scoring chances. The second half started very much as the first with Eaton pushing hard for the opening goal.

The breakthrough finally came on the hour when Dom Mason fired low from 20 yards past Andrew Wale in the Eynesbury goal. The next 15 minutes saw Eaton have further opportunities to double the lead but they were to rue those chances when Eynesbury stalwart Neil Morris fired into the roof of Shay Griffiths goal after some good play from Eynesbury saw a penalty appeal finished by Morris before the referee had a decision to make. Eynesbury scored what resulted in being the winning goal and made it 2-1 when an Eaton pass struck the referee and landed in the path of Ryan Baxter who made no mistake going through one on one with Griffiths. The home side continued to push forward for what would have been a deserved equaliser but with a couple of minutes left on the clock Andrew Wale secured all three points with a point blank save at the feet of Ben Cole.

Whilst the away side celebrated 3 points the Eaton Socon first string can take consolation in the performance and although ultimately they will feel its points dropped, this young side has fantastic potential to grow and achieve together. The local Derby’s come thick and fast during this festive period as the first team make the short journey across town to play St Neots reserves next Saturday as they look to get back to winning ways.
