Eaton Socon res. 5, Fordham 2

6th April 2019 :: Cambs FA County League MPG 1B

Eagles soar to the top of the league!

Eaton faced top of the table Fordham and came away with another impressive victory in their search for promotion.

The first half saw Eaton come out and impose themselves on the game and they should’ve been ahead early on but couldn’t make their dominance pay. The breakthrough came when top scorer Alan Moore nodded home from close range after another good delivery into the box from Andy Coles. Some sloppy defending allowed Fordham back into the game and after failing to clear their lines the unfortunate Barry Albone directed the ball into his own net. The scoreline soon changed back in favour of the home side though as the impressive Ian Dawkes set up Darren Blackall at the back post to give the Eaton the lead. 2-1 at the break but still all to play for.

The second half started in the same way as the first with Eaton on top and they were rewarded when Blackall fired home his second of the day to make it 3-1. Fordham then had a little spell in the game that made things interesting reducing the score to 3-2. They had a few half chances to draw level but Eaton kept them at bay. Then came the crucial goal. Another good delivery into the box and Kirk Kidd headed home to restore the two goal cushion. With the away side deflated Eaton should’ve added to their total from the penalty spot but Moore’s effort was saved. Moore then fired against the bar for the second time on the day before Ryan Whittingham finished well to seal a deserved victory for the Eagles. The victory saw them move to the top of the league with three games left to play.
